The key benefit of thermal testing, is that the tests are constructed using drones.. meaning no foot access, scaffolding or ladders are required. Large areas can be tested in a reasonably short amount of time, meaning building maintenance & isolating leaks to confined sections of large roofs is very beneficial from a financial maintenance budget perspective.
In simple terms, surfaces subjected to moisture ingress retain heat from the sun, for longer than surfaces that are dry. Thermal tests are time sensitive.. tests should be conducted at sunset (or shortly after), ideally on dry roof surfaces (so no rain for a day or two), and on a day that is no longer than 7 days since the last rainfall.
They can be conducted, but the pooling, may affect the data. This is where experience comes in. As NFRC roofers, we can analyse areas with significant pooling, alongside evidence of internal ingress & a standard RGB map of your roof, to advise on the areas that are giving us false or altered thermal data.
